Complacency is probably my number one enemy. Not because it always looks dangerous. Most of the time, it feels safe. It sounds like: “I’m good.” “We’re good.” “Everything is fine.” “I’ll deal with that later.” But that is what makes it so dangerous. Sometimes there is rot underneath the surface, and we keep ignoring it because today still feels okay. The habits are slipping. The discipline is fading. The growth is slowing down. The warning signs are there. But nothing has fallen apart yet, so we convince ourselves we’re fine. Proverbs says, “The complacency of fools will destroy them.” That verse has been sitting with me. Today’s success is not tomorrow’s victory. So daily, I want to stay vigilant. Daily, I want to stand guard. Daily, I want to keep pressing forward. Because I don’t believe we ever truly “make it.” I believe we go from one level of growth to another. The moment someone says, “I’m good. I don’t need anyone,” that is usually when the fall starts coming. My enemy is complacency. Because constant growth is how the great become greater. Where do you think complacency shows up the most?

My #2 enemy is self-reliance. I believe we should put our best in. I believe we should take responsibility. I believe we should do what we can. But there is a dangerous place we can get to where we start believing everything depends only on us. We become gods of our own lives. And when life does not go the way we planned, we internalize everything. Mike Tyson said, “Everybody has a plan until they get punched in the face.” And that is life. You can plan. You can prepare. You can do everything you know to do. And things still may not go the way you thought they should. Isaiah 55 says, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord.” That reminds me that I do not see everything. I do not know everything. And I was never meant to carry everything alone. So I am learning to ask: “What is the lesson in this?” Bring God in. Bring the right people in. Family. Friends. Your spouse. Self-reliance can look like strength from the outside, but internally it can become isolation. Bringing God and the people I trust into my life is freeing.
